The castle is in a strategical dominant position of Llobreg’os river valley, that’s why in the high Middle Ages became a leadership castle for christian soldiers when they slowly were conquering hispanic muslim lands

We can find the first historical references in the middle part of 11th Century, when Arnau Mir de Tost took possession in the name if his lord, the count of Urgell Ermengol II. The castle is documented as “castrum des Ciges” entailed to the close “ Castrum Floriaci” (Florejacs) in a donation document from the Viscount of Cabrera, Pere Ponç, and his son-in-law Arnau, to the bishopric of Urgell in the year 1100.

Since that times, the castle kept in the same family lineage hands, although they used different noble titles. Therefore, families like Alemany de Cervelló, Josa, Ribera, Agulló de Pinós, and recently Sentmenat, Calvo de Encalada and Febrer have possessed the authority of this place and the barony of the close Florejacs castle, which history passed trough linked with Les Sitges one for almost one thousand years.

In the second third of 20th Century the castle passed to Canals family hands, who assumed all building consolidation and adaptation new times tasks. Nowadays, the castle is presented regularly to the public, for the first time in ten centuries history, with vocation of being the nucleus of  cultural, ludic and social events.

Although castle’s origins goes back to the 11th Century, most of the elements kept are from the 15th. Nowadays building is composed by an stone cube of rectangular ground plan, with talus walls and donjon also rectangular ground plan.
It shows a warrior outward appearance because of two main elements: At the top of the magnificent tower there’re battlements. The wall is in talus and it keeps some loopholes, battlements with hooks and rests of a sentry box above the main gate.
The interior reveal  a few stately rooms that conform it as a prototype of a gothic castle-palace. It structure is organized around a central courtyard and it turns around the donjon, that conserves the primitive access at 8 metres from the ground.
In the ground floor there are the celler, dungeons and some rooms for the kitchen, oven and stables. The first floor is the main one, faced to the south by big renaissance windows with carved stone seats at every side.
In the second floor, where it was the ancient patrol way, there’s placed a terrace faced to the south, fenced at the south by battlements and the sentry box of the wall. In the interior we can find the romanesque gate of access to the tower and the stairways that let us go to the very top, where there’s a magnificent view of the Lleida’s plain.

There’re three spaces offered for events:

  • The noble hall is in the first floor. With a capacity for 100 people, it’s ideal for celebrations and exclusive events. Its elements  (a big chimney, big windows faced to the south, a timbered ceiling and walls of well fit ashlar with coats of arms) make of it a magnificent lounge for prestigious events.
  • The hunters hall is in the ground floor, with a direct access to the courtyard. It has a capacity for 80 people and it is though for meetings , ludical events and casual banquetings.
  • The exterior walled courtyard; It’s placed in the easter side, with a capacity for 120 people,  it’s ideal for open air events and for celebrations with children presence.

The rest of spaces (the courtyard, the celler, the stables, the oven, halls, the terrace, so on) are an ideal complements for discovering how it was life in a medieval castle and what they were the characteristical elements of a building that still nowadays joins the double character of militar fortress and aristocracy residence.
